sides. the fight is on for aleppo, syria's largest city and one of the world's oldest. the rebels call it a decisive battle. it is also deadly. this weekend the intense combat triggered a massive fire in the city's ancient marketplace. a priceless landmark, reducing much of it to ashes. we made our way in to syria, past scenes of devastation, to the outskirts of aleppo. to meet rebel commander ahmed afaj once a local businessman now driven by the loss of his own brother, killed in combat. he leads more than 2500 rebels. all sunni muslims. and says he is battling shiite militants fighting for the regime, mostly from outside syria. iranian and hezbollah fighters are here in large numbers, he says. when we kill them, we find their i.d. cards. the u.s. has accused iran of meddling in syria. the commander goes farther. he says of the regime, all of the planes they're using, the new ones, are from iran. and, he says, government planes are dropping a new kind of weapon. bombs in barrels, with chemicals, he says, that take out city blocks. a whole family was in here, he says, and an old man. t

in d.c., too, the fog, a big issue this morning up and down the big cities from new york city all the way down through philadelphia, baltimore and d.c. give yourself some extra time. i'm sure we're going to have airport delays as the airports get going this morning. some people are saying it's the worst fog they've seen in a long time throughout this region. it will lift by 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. so the heart of it is right now. we will see a few showers during the day but not like yesterday where it really was a rainout in a few spots. temperatures will be very warm and humid. we are going to see a chance of showers in new york city as we go through thursday and then again over the weekend. it's over the weekend that the temperatures drop on the east coast including washington, d.c., and boston with highs in the 50s and 60s. right now all that cool air is located in montana. i'm showing you this because that white on the map is snow in montana. this is the sign of things to come. the cool, cold air coming down from billings. it will arrive tomorrow. minneapolis and kansas city. so en

rising above the central city's skyline as syrian government warplanes, tanks and artillery intensified their assault. meanwhile, turkish media reported syrian troops fired another mortar round into southern turkey. no one was hurt, but the turkish military returned fire. a similar exchange earlier this week left several dead on both sides. the turmoil deepened today in south africa's mining industry. the world's largest platinum producer, amplats, fired 12,000 miners for staging an unlawful strike. it was the latest turn in two months of labor unrest and violence in south africa. in august, police shot and killed 34 strikers working for another major platinum concern. nearly 80,000 miners are currently striking across the country. the highest court in britain ruled today that five terror suspects can be extradited to the u.s., including abu hamza al-masri. the radical muslim preacher, and the others, had fought extradition for years. al-masri's mosque in london was known as a training ground for radical islamists in the 1990s. he's accused of trying to set up a terror training camp in

voted so look, in campaigns from presidential down to city council every aspect of the campaign message turnout. i think the air wars are the ones that get all the coverage on tv but i think the ground wars will be equally important. look, i think the other thing about the electorate is at least in "the wall street journal" colin the nbc poll that the two firms collaborated on it was pre-debate. you know the president was winning independent voters by 13 points. and, in 2008 he defeated john mccain by 8% with independent smacks so with the admonition of less -- let's wait until the dust has settled and see the polls in the next couple of days i'm going to be looking at the numbers in the other thing very quickly in terms of the minority vote. the other thing about barack obama's election in 2008 was the one something on the order of 43% of the white vote and in most of the national polls that is kind of where he is so that will be another number to look out for. the country is changing and in 2008, three-quarters of the electorate was white which was down from the mid-to high 80s 20 yea

as the biggest poorest city in america. you two gentlemen did well for yourselves in the private sector. what can you tell the people of cleveland or cities like cleveland that your administration will do to better their lives? >> well, gwen, there are several things that i think need to be done and are being done. we've, of course, been through a difficult recession and in the aftermath of 9/11 where we lost over a million jobs after the attack, we think the key is to address some basic fundamental issues that the president is already working on. i think probably the most successful thing we can do with respect to ending poverty is to get people jobs. there's no better antidote than a good-paying job that allows people to take care of their families. to do that, we have to make america the best place in the world to do business. we have to deal with tax policy, reduce the litigation costs built into our society, provide adequate medical care and make certain we can, in fact, create the opportunities that are vital to that process. i zero in in particular on education. i think the most important
